The Marvels Is a Fun Time, Especially for Fans of TV’s Ms. Marvel

If you’re not planning to watch The Marvels, that’s perfectly fine! However, I must say, as someone who attended an early screening, if you enjoyed the charming Ms. Marvel series on Disney+, you’ll likely find The Marvels thoroughly enjoyable.

Going into The Marvels, I had no expectations, especially after its numerous delays and production issues. Yet, as the movie unfolded, I found myself smiling and even laughing out loud. It’s a blast of fun, akin to Spider-Man: No Way Home, and a departure from the heavier tone of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Set to release on Friday, Nov. 10, The Marvels kicks off with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) encountering a wormhole linked to Kree revolutionary Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton). At the behest of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Carol’s journey intertwines with her estranged niece Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), now a S.A.B.E.R. astronaut, and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), a superfan from Jersey City. Together, the trio must thwart Dar-Benn’s plan and navigate the challenges that come their way, including dealing with Flerken.

The cast is exceptional, with standout performances from Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh as Kamala’s family. Vellani shines as Kamala, bringing a delightful energy to the film. Her fan interactions with Carol and Monica add to the film’s joy, while Parris delivers a more nuanced performance, addressing Monica’s past issues with Captain Marvel.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, the action scenes are well-executed, despite the complexity of the power dynamics. The chemistry between Larson, Parris, and Vellani is infectious, adding to the film’s charm.

Despite its strengths, The Marvels does have a couple of silly sequences that may not resonate with everyone. Additionally, the film’s villain is forgettable, and there are continuity issues with the TV series Secret Invasion.

Overall, The Marvels is a fun, fast-paced film that sets up future adventures for Kamala and Adult Monica. The mid-credits scene will leave MCU fans excited for what’s to come.
